Accurate, detailed, and free information is the key to sustainable management and effective governance of forests and landscapes. WRI works with governments, civil society, and companies in Indonesia to provide information and to increase transparency.

WRI’s forest monitoring tools like Global Forest Watch allow anyone with an Internet connection to see when and where deforestation has occurred. It also allows users to view relevant data such as land use designation, current land cover, and the legal classification of land.

WRI also works with local civil society on how to implement Indonesia’s freedom of information law more effectively. Through the Strengthening the Right to Environmental Information for People and the Environment (STRIPE) and Governance of Forests Initiative (GFI) Indonesian coalitions, WRI is supporting the identification of practical solutions for improving access to environmental information.
