JAKARTA, INDONESIA— As the dry season begins in Indonesia, the risk of fires and haze is growing. On July 23, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Indonesia’s National REDD+ Agency (BP REDD) will launch Global Forest Watch Fires (GFW-Fires), an online platform to monitor and respond to forest and land fires in Southeast Asia. The platform builds off the Global Forest Watch (GFW) platform and will feature the highest-resolution commercially available satellite imagery from Digital Globe, near real-time fire alerts from NASA and NOAA, an SMS alert system, land-use and concession maps, and more.
The launch event at the BP REDD office in Jakarta will include leaders from civil society and government to discuss how GFW-Fires can be used to monitor and respond to fires and haze across Southeast Asia. GFW- Fires is a collaboration between WRI, BP REDD, Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia’s National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), Digital Globe, Google, Esri, and others.
Featured speakers include: Minister Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Head of UKP4; Heru Prasetyo, Head of BP REDD; Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman Yayasan WRI Indonesia; and Dr. Nigel Sizer, WRI; and Andika Putraditama, WRI.
